  4. 0:21 The problem we work on at REF is one you might be familiar with where individual engineers are going really fast with AI, but the team as a whole is not.
  5. 0:28 And we're working to help close that gap.
  6. 0:32 What I'm gonna be talking about today is what happens when your whole team gets 10 times faster.
  7. 0:38 All the things that don't go well
  8. 0:41 And my goal is to give you a blueprint for how to get through those issues and have the whole team move faster together.
  9. 0:51 The way I want to accomplish that is first talk about those issues, define some terms, then we'll talk about how did we get here, where are we at now,
  10. 1:02 And we'll use that to triangulate on some solutions.
  11. 1:05 We'll start high level and we'll work down and get more and more practical until we leave with a couple of things you can leave here and do immediately.

  16. 1:17 All right, so let's get into it.
  17. 1:22 These are some of the problems you might be experiencing right now.
  18. 1:25 These are problems that affect individuals and are actually magnified at the team level, once the entire team starts experiencing them.
  19. 1:34 So the first one, too many PRs to merge.
  20. 1:37 This is the classic first problem you hit when you start adopting AI as an engineer.
  21. 1:41 You're like, great, I'm shipping stuff, and you push up those PRs and you're like,
  22. 1:45 there's no way I can merge all these.
  23. 1:47 And this is obviously magnified when the whole team does this, merge conflicts, merge queue breaks down, things get bad.
  24. 1:55 The second problem is that you're moving in too many directions at once.
  25. 1:59 This is also both individual and a team problem.
  26. 2:02 Individually, this is where you have a bunch of agents doing different things, you're trying to remember who's doing what, and your brain gets fried.
  27. 2:09 At the organizational level, this is your engineers picking up things and running in a certain direction, another engineer's running over here, maybe some are bumping into each other, and you're not moving cohesively with focus because you're just sprinting in all sorts of directions.
  28. 2:25 The third problem you might be experiencing is declaring agent bankruptcy.
  29. 2:29 This is a common pattern I see engineers get into where
  30. 2:33 You're cranking, you have your 12 terminals open.
  31. 2:36 At the end of the day, you're like, yeah, I did a lot of work.
  32. 2:38 You step away from your laptop, spend time with your friends and family.
  33. 2:43 Next morning, you come back and it's like walking into just a room of strangers.
  34. 2:47 Who are these people, what are they doing here?
  35. 2:49 But no problem, they're agents, so you just get rid of them and start over again.
  36. 2:55 The problem though is it feels like you're doing a lot of work, but you're doing the same work and you're spending tokens twice.
  37. 3:03 You're doing the same problems over and over again.
  38. 3:07 And if you think about that organizationally, that's your team not being efficient with both their time and their token resources.
  39. 3:16 Problem four though is actually the most important one.
  40. 3:20 It's critical decisions being made by agents.
  41. 3:22 Once you have agents
  42. 3:25 doing a lot of your work, if you as an engineer are letting an agent make a critical decision, you are ceding control of your code.
  43. 3:32 You are no longer the owner of that code, the agent is.
  44. 3:36 And if you imagine that at scale at your company, if the engineers across your team are giving up ownership of the code, you no longer own the product.
  45. 3:46 These are a bunch of problems you might be experiencing at different degrees at different days.
  46. 3:52 The way I like to bundle it up is into this term velocity sickness.
  47. 3:56 This is the stress caused by sudden output
  48. 4:00 increases thanks to AI.
  49. 4:02 It affects individuals or teams.
  50. 4:05 And the result is output without impact.
