  2. 0:36 I joined the company two and a half years ago when it was just, you know, FDE was just two engineers at the time.
  3. 0:44 And today, my org is about 30 engineers across four deployed developer API and our new AI services business.
  4. 0:56 So I know this is kind of a running theme, but like no one knows what FDE is.
  5. 1:00 So I'm just going to spend a moment on that.
  6. 1:06 So, yeah, I actually kind of like this meme.
  7. 1:09 To me, it's kind of funny.
  8. 1:12 But I actually think it's totally wrong.
  9. 1:14 I don't see this as the actual true form of what FDE is.
  10. 1:20 I don't see it as the final evolution or boss mode of technical go-to-market roles.
  11. 1:27 Now, this might be true at some companies, but at least at Ramp, it's a little bit different.
  12. 1:35 So FD at RAMP, we live within the engineering organization and our goal is to help RAMP win up market.
  13. 1:45 So with that in mind, what we do is we basically work on the core product and our new agentic features and make them work really well for our largest enterprise customers.
  14. 1:59 So that's just a little bit of intro context.
  15. 2:02 I want to dig in and today,
  16. 2:04 Like I said, there's just two things I'm gonna share with you.
  17. 2:06 Literally two things, very easy talk.
  18. 2:10 And these are the principles that I would say have really guided us and I would say probably the two most important things that we have.
  19. 2:16 Always be scoping and scale with tokens.
  20. 2:21 So let's get started with the first one on scoping.
  21. 2:25 So I would say there's this thing where like, many people think that as an FTE, your job is to just say yes to the customer.
  22. 2:34 But that's wrong.
  23. 2:36 If you were just to say yes, instead of beautiful Waymos that we have driving us around in San Francisco, you'd have something like this.
  24. 2:45 Horses with rockets strapped to their legs.
  25. 2:49 And the point is, you want to help the customer be successful, you want to try to figure out a way to say yes, but you actually want to deliver good software.
  26. 2:59 You need to build the right thing.
  27. 3:01 So you don't just endlessly say yes to people.
  28. 3:04 And I do want to share an example of something that I would say happens somewhat regularly in one form or another at Ramp.
  29. 3:15 So it's Friday night, and an enterprise sales rep comes to us with an urgent request that this super important strategic logo is only going to close if we build out an SAP S4 HANA integration.
  30. 3:33 I think that the default engineering reflex is like, shit, what are the SAP API docs, where do I find them, and how do I build this integration?
  31. 3:43 But what a well-trained FDE would do is pause for a second and say, okay, first of all, what's driving the urgency here?
  32. 3:53 One thing I've seen is I've seen sales reps who like go kind of crazy because it's like the end of the quarter and they're trying to hit their quota and close the deal and not because the customer is the one driving the urgency.
  33. 4:03 So that's like one example.
  34. 4:06 But
  35. 4:08 As an FD, you're asking tons of questions to gather context about what's important and what actually is the right thing to build.
  36. 4:16 And so you might ask, who's using this integration?
  37. 4:21 Have we exhausted all the different workarounds?
  38. 4:23 Is there something manual that we can do in the meantime?
  39. 4:25 Does the customer have technical resources?
  40. 4:27 Can they hit our API so that we don't have to build this thing?
  41. 4:32 But I'd say the most important thing that an FD does is also looks beyond this one request and looks at the other prospects that are coming down the pipeline and other customers to see if anyone else would benefit from this as well.
  42. 4:48 And the point is that by gaining all this context, you can do a better job of building the right thing.
  43. 4:57 So I want to share another story that was really, really painful for us in the early days.
  44. 5:02 We had this large enterprise customer, and they needed this reimbursement feature on mobile.
  45. 5:10 Unfortunately, our mobile team was totally swamped.
  46. 5:13 So we basically just had to roll up our sleeves as FDEs and just find out a way to get things done.
  47. 5:20 And we had two of the engineers on the team just learn how to do iOS and Android development.
  48. 5:26 And it was awesome.
  49. 5:27 We were super excited.
  50. 5:28 We're like, OK, we're going to ship this feature.
